Kvarka är en synnerligen smittsam hästsjukdom som är spridd i hela världen. Kvarka orsakas av bakterien Streptococcus equi subsp. equi. Utmärkande för sjukdomen är inflammation i övre luftvägarna samt bölder i huvudets och halsens lymfknutor.

Strangles is a highly infectious disease, common among horses all over the world. Strangles is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi subsp. equi. The disese causes inflammation of the upper airways and abscesses in the lymphnodes of the horse’s head and neck. Read more…

Strangles has affected horses around the world for centuries. In addition to great suffering, the disease also causes severe economic consequences for the horse industry. In some horses, the infection remains in the guttural pouch even after the horse has recovered from disease and they can become silent spreaders of the bacterium. Strangles can affect all horses, regardless of breed, sex and age, and is endemic in horses all over the world, with the exception of Iceland. Horses are one of the animals that travels the most in the world, within countries, between countries and even continents, for example to participate in various competitions. This helps to spread the disease over long distances. In Sweden, we have about 76 strangles outbreaks each year and these are mainly controlled by biosecurity routines. To spread knowledge and create an understanding of how we together can stop strangles, we have launched kvarka.se – an initiative from Intervacc.
Here we share information about strangles and how we can work together to reduce the number of outbreaks and their consequences. For the sake of horses and for you as the owner.
